The national debt climbed over $40 trillion on Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to the US Treasury’s Debt to the Penny dataset.  The milestone is arriving months earlier than previous projections indicated, The Washington Post reported. The total includes about $32.2 trillion in debt held by the public and $7.8 trillion in obligations held within the federal government.
